GANGTOK: In a thrilling quarterfinal clash, Chennaiyin FC pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over tournament favorites Church Boys United of Nepal to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the 40th Governor’s Gold Cup at Paljor Stadium on November 19.
Vishal R scored the match-winning goal in the 86th minute, a clinical finish that broke the deadlock and handed Chennaiyin FC a hard-earned win. His performance earned him the ‘Man of the Match’ award in what was a tense and tightly contested affair under the floodlights.
The quarterfinal witnessed an enthusiastic turnout of supporters, with most in favor of the Nepalese side. However, Church Boys United struggled to break down Chennaiyin FC’s resolute defense and quick counter-attacks, leaving them with no answers in the closing stages.
With the loss, all four foreign clubs, which had been given direct entry to the quarterfinals, have now been eliminated from the tournament, marking a dramatic turn of events.
Looking ahead, Chennaiyin FC will face local favorites Gangtok Himalayan SC in the second semi-final on November 21.
The first semi-final will take place on Wednesday evening under the floodlights, where Northeast United FC will lock horns with Gokulam FC from Kerala.
