BRO undertakes road repair works in Sikkim on war footing

GANGTOK: Post GLOF in Oct 2023, road infrastructure particularly in North Sikkim suffered massive damage, resulting in sharp dip in tourism in the state.
Project Swastik of Border Roads Organistaion, a lead road construction agency, despite harsh and inclement weather condition has left no stone unturned in restoring connectivity to North Sikkim.
As prolonged monsoon season in Sikkim has come to end, brave workers of Project Swastik are making all efforts in strengthening the damaged roads infrastructure and undertaking crucial surfacing works.
Due to GLOF in Oct 2023 and further due to cloud burst in June 2024, Gangtok-Chungthang road between Naga and Theng (approx. eight kilometres) suffered massive damage. As part of focused drive, brave workers of 758 BRTF are working round the clock under challenging circumstances towards early restoration of road connectivity between Naga to Theng.
Major work on said stretch includes approx. five kilometres of formation cutting along green field alignment and construction of 180 feet long bailey bridge. Opening of said road stretch will not only enable all users to move to North Sikkim in earlier time frame but will also give major boost to tourism.
Currently, all vehicles are moving to North Sikkim via Dikchu-Sanklang-Shipgyer road which has multiple sharp bends and steep gradient.
Further, to facilitate smooth movement of Armed Forces towards Indo-China border and boost tourism, towards Gurdongmar lake in North Sikkim, BRO is carrying out surfacing works on war footing, in high altitude area on Kalep-Giagong road.
Post Monsoon, 758 BRTF of Project Swastik has undertaken resurfacing works in Gangtok Town, on Gangtok-Chungthang road, so as to provide, smooth and comfortable ride to all users. Selfless working by BRO while executing resurfacing work till late night, in busy Gangtok town has earned huge appreciation amongst locals.
