GANGTOK: India has reiterated its full support to Nepal in its efforts to restore peace and stability, following the formation of an interim government in the neighbouring country earlier this month.
Speaking at a weekly media briefing on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said: “We welcomed the new interim government in Nepal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also had a telephonic conversation with Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, where he reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in Nepal.”
Jaiswal emphasized India’s role as a close neighbour, development partner, and fellow democracy, adding that both nations will continue to work closely together for the progress and prosperity of their people.
The Indian Prime Minister had extended warm wishes to Nepal on the occasion of its National Day, celebrated on Friday. He also expressed condolences for the recent tragic loss of lives in Nepal.
In a social media post following the call, PM Modi wrote: “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability.”
India had earlier officially welcomed the formation of the interim government under Karki’s leadership on September 12, expressing hope that the transition would strengthen democratic institutions and promote national unity in Nepal.
The MEA had also stated: “We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability. India remains committed to further strengthening the deep-rooted ties with Nepal.”
