PAKYONG: The torrential rainfall that has persisted over the past 72 hours has significantly impacted various areas within the Rangpo Sub-Division.
Landslide incidents have affected numerous areas as a result of the incessant rains recorded over the past 72 hours. Particularly in 20th Mile, Bardang NH-10, heavy boulders, sludge, and debris have become serious concerns, continuously cascading from nearby hilltops.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has commenced road clearance operations since September 27.
At present, one-way traffic flow has been established and is operational, although efforts to restore full access are ongoing. Continuous vigilance is imperative, as NHIDCL officials are on-site, supported by two JCB machines available for immediate action.
Additionally, in Pachak, Central Pendam, a landslide occurred this morning. An immediate response was coordinated by the Block Development Officer (BDO) for Duga, along with the Revenue Inspector and DMA staff from the Rangpo Sub-Division Office, ensuring that the situation of affected individuals was duly addressed. Victims were supplied with tarpaulins while efforts to facilitate their safe relocation continued.
In West Pendam, the road closure at Sawney, resulting from morning landslides, has been successfully cleared, thereby enabling smoother vehicular passage.
Landslide occurrence at Sakhu within the West Pendam Block has necessitated an inspection by the head surveyor from the Rangpo Sub-Division Office to evaluate the extent of the damage.
Caution is heightened concerning a bridge located at Kumrek, Rangpo. The recent heavy rainfall has significantly compromised the structural integrity of the bridge, necessitating its closure to vehicular traffic, with only pedestrians permitted to cross at their own risk. The Kumrek Road remains shut due to erosion of the formation and a noticeable compromise in the bridge’s strength, attributed to the relentless rain.
Moreover, access routes to Rangpo town and its surrounding rural areas have encountered the threat of blockage due to landslides and debris. Although most pathways have been cleared, certain sectors remain perilously vulnerable to future obstructions, complicating transportation and access in light of potential recurring rainfall.
Regarding residential structures, no alarming reports have been documented in the last 72 hours concerning extensive destruction of homes. While some minor property damage has been observed in areas susceptible to landslides, no total destruction has been recorded. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially in regions that have experienced landslides in the past. The prospect of future rainfall may exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, underscoring the importance of continual awareness.
Infrastructure, which encompasses critical elements such as water pipelines, electrical poles, and public facilities, has incurred minor damage in certain locations due to the overwhelming rainfall.
No significant losses have been reported, allowing essential services to continue functioning for the community.
Likewise, SDM Rangpo and officials from line departments are conducting routine inspections and maintenance to minimise any potential harm caused by adverse weather.
