GANGTOK: Press Club of Sikkim (PCS) donated books for the inmates of State Central Prison on October 5. The donation was on the occasion of 84th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister late Nar Bahadur Bhandari.
The delegation of Press Club of Sikkim was led by president Bhim Rawat and members of PCS executives along with Gangtok district senior DIO Sarojini Subba of State Information and Public Relations department.
The books were received by Sub Jailor Ten Tshering Lepcha along with other officials of the State Central Prison.
Press Club of Sikkim had carried out a similar initiative setting up the library for inmates at State Central Prison on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15, 2007. The delegation then was led by former PCS President late CD Rai. PCS had then donated books along with two book shelves.
Over 200 books were donated by Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Nirman Prakashan, Pari Prakashan, and Janpaksha Prakashan as well as by the PCS.
The PCS expresses gratitude to the aforementioned publications.
On the occasion, PCS president Bhim Rawat shared, “After setting up the library in 2007, not much contribution was made to the library. With the aim to updating the library, PCS thought about donating the books. PCS also wanted to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister late Nar Bahadur Bhandari who was instrumental in the recognition of Nepali language in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution. Hence, most of the books that were donated today are in Nepali language for the ease of reading of the inmates”.
Sub Jailor Ten Tshering Lepcha expressed gratitude to the PCS for donating the books, claiming that donation and upgradation of books, especially in Nepali language were necessary and will prove to be beneficial for the inmates of State Central Prison, a press release informs.
