GANGTOK: In line with the directives of Chief Minister PS Golay, the Tourism department has announced the decentralization of the permit system for issuing Protected Area Permits (PAP) for Nathu La Pass (Indian nationals only), two-wheeler permits, and foreigners’ permits for Tsomgo Lake through JN Road axis and the Lachung / Yumesamdong / Lachen/ Thangu and Dzongu axis.

Decentralized Permit Issuance from All Districts
Starting from September 24, the Tourism department will issue 50 vehicle permits per day for Nathu La Pass through designated tourism offices in each district. In a bid to boost tourism in Namchi and Soreng districts, the department is introducing ‘free Nathu La Pass permits’ for domestic tourists who stay at least one night in registered hotels or homestays within these two districts.
To avail this benefit, tourists must submit a valid hotel or homestay bill, along with other relevant supporting documents, through a local registered travel agency, at least three days prior to the date of travel. Furthermore, 33% of the permit quota for Namchi and Soreng districts can be issued on a payment basis via Bank Receipt to non-resident tourists and locals, if required. These permits can be issued for the next three days, but the total number of permits issued for a particular day should not be more than 50, a press release informs.

Permits for Foreign Nationals
Similarly, PAPs will be available for foreign nationals visiting Tsomgo Lake (1-day permit) or Lachung, Yumesamdong, Lachen, Thangu, and Dzongu (5-day permits) from all the districts.
The Tourism department said that the applications must be routed through a local registered travel agency and such foreign nationals are to be accompanied by a certified guide and on payment basis via Bank Receipt, as per the prescribed guidelines. For reaching Tsomgo Lake foreigners should travel through JN Road axis (Lingtam axis is not permitted).

“This initiative aligns with the Chief Minister’s vision of promoting balanced tourism development across all districts while ensuring local businesses, travel agencies, and certified guides benefit from increased tourist footfall. The decentralization of the permit system aims to foster sustainable economic growth, enhanced transparency and streamlining the process for travellers,” said the Tourism department.
