PAKYONG: India’s first Digital Nomad Village was officially inaugurated today at Yakten Village by Pamin Lepcha, MLA and Advisor for Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare department. This marks a step towards creating a sustainable, community-driven destination for digital nomads from across the country and the world.
‘Nomad Sikkim’, is a joint initiative of the District Administrative Centre, Pakyong, and Sarvahitey NGO to develop a digital nomad hub for working professionals. It is designed for professionals seeking a balance between remote work and a peaceful lifestyle. The village is equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi networks to ensure reliable connectivity, while also promoting eco-friendly practices and fostering a sustainable remote work environment.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by District Collector Pakyong, Rohan Agawane; ADC (HQ), GL Meena; ADC (Dev), Robin Pd. Sewa; OSD to MLA, Rhenock Constituency, DB Chettri; OSD to MLA, Gnathang-Machong, MB Gurung; Deputy Director, Tourism Department, Sushma Pradhan; BDO Pakyong, Sangay Tamang; Project Head for Digital Nomads and Founder of Sarvahitey NGO, Prem Prakash; Arpit Bansal, member Sarvahitey, officials from various departments, and representatives from several organisations.
Congratulating the tourism stakeholders, PaminLepcha applauded the vision of creating a space for digital nomads amidst the state’s scenic landscapes. She emphasised the importance of offering a warm and welcoming experience to visitors and suggested exploring other potential locations in the region to establish future digital nomad villages.
She further assured her continued support to promote the initiative and work towards making it the most visited Digital Nomad Village in the country. Earlier in the day, she also toured the village to review the facilities being provided.
Highlighting the Chief Minister’s initiative of “One Family, One Entrepreneur,” DC Pakyong, Rohan Agawane, stated that ‘Nomad Sikkim’ would serve as a model to nurture grassroot entrepreneurs and to channelize the energy of the youth towards productivity and innovation in the private sector. He emphasised that this initiative would drive away the factor of seasonality generally found in tourism sector since digital nomads are comfortable to travel even during non-tourist seasons. This would enhance the income of the locals by atleast five times if implemented well and would create new employment opportunities for the locals.
He added that this initiative would also drive sustainable community development by focusing on creating zero-waste villages, foster cultural exchanges, and boost the local economy. He also informed that the village is now fully equipped to welcome digital nomads, and a zero-waste management system has been implemented to maintain an environmentally friendly atmosphere.
Additionally, Sushma Pradhan, Deputy Director, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, shared insights into the establishment of the village under the leadership of MP Rajya Sabha, DT Lepcha, and outlined the infrastructural developments and facilities available at Nomad Sikkim.
Nomad Sikkim has already begun hosting its first digital nomads, offering them a unique opportunity to work remotely while being immersed in a tranquil, rural environment. This model not only provides a refreshing work setting but also supports local livelihoods and brings national attention to the lesser-known yet stunning regions of Sikkim.
