GANGTOK: The 59th Nathula Vijay Diwas was commemorated on Thursday at the historic Nathula Pass with solemnity, pride, and national spirit, in the esteemed presence of Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
The event marked the continuation of last year’s historic declaration by the Governor, officially recognizing September 11 as Nathula Vijay Diwas, a significant evolution from the previously observed Nathula Diwas. The day honours the extraordinary courage and victory of Indian soldiers in the face of aggression from Chinese forces at Nathula in 1967.
On this occasion, dignitaries paid deep tribute to the brave officers and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, defending the sovereignty of the nation in one of the most challenging terrains on the India-China border.
In a special gesture of remembrance, a bust of Late Major General Sagat Singh was unveiled at the Nathula border. Major General Sagat Singh, the then General Officer Commanding of the 17 Mountain Division, led the Indian Army during the 11th September 1967 Nathula skirmish. Under his resolute leadership, Indian soldiers not only repelled enemy advances but compelled them to retreat and surrender. The bust now stands as a lasting symbol of courage, leadership, and patriotic inspiration for generations to come.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister extended heartiest congratulations to the entire Indian Army, especially the brave soldiers serving at Nathula, and expressed profound respect for the fallen heroes whose sacrifices continue to protect the nation.
He also acknowledged the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose Vibrant Village Program has transformed border villages by bringing development, connectivity, and security to the forefront. The Defense Minister, Mr Rajnath Singh was also commended for his support and consistent engagement with India’s armed forces.
Highlighting state-level initiatives, Chief Minister mentioned with pride that Sikkim became the first state to implement a 20% reservation in police recruitment for Agniveer soldiers, along with dedicated training and compassionate appointments for families of martyrs reflecting the state government’s deep commitment to soldier welfare.
He concluded by expressing heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army jawans who worked with dedication behind the scenes to ensure the success of the event.
The event was graced by MLA Pamin Lepcha, Major General MS Rathore, GOC of the 17th Mountain Division, family members of Late Major General Sagat Singh, who travelled from Rajasthan to attend the ceremony. Also in attendance were senior military officials, government representatives, and members of the civil society.
