SINGTAM: Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Chairman of the Commission for Glacial Hazard, visited Singtam Nagar Panchayat on Thursday as part of a stakeholder consultation aimed at assessing the aftermath of the devastating flash floods that struck the region on October 3–4, 2023.
During his visit, Dr. Gupta, accompanied by a high-level delegation, surveyed the extensive damage caused by the flood and interacted directly with affected residents.
Locals expressed concerns about the recurring threat of floods and called for urgent intervention, particularly the construction of protective walls to safeguard their communities from future disasters, a press release informs.
The visiting delegation included Dr. Sandeep Tambe, principal secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST); Dhiren Shrestha, secretary, DST; L.D. Lamtha, secretary, Water Resources department; SDM Martam Roshan Subba; District Planning Officer Sonam Lepcha; and senior officials from the Mines & Geology department and other district authorities.
Local representatives from Singtam Nagar Panchayat were also present, including Municipal president Suresh Kumar Tamang, vice-president Bindhiya Subba, councillors Kishore Chettri, Yad Kumari Biswakarma, Mukesh Agarwal, and Municipal Executive Officer Ujjwal Pandey. Law enforcement officials, including SHO Sher Bahadur Manger and Senior Inspector Birendra Mani Rai, along with Panchayat staff, participated in the proceedings.
