GYALSHING: The 5-day Annual Tongsum Village Tourism Festival organised by the Darap Tourism Development Committee (DTDC)at Darap in West Sikkim concluded on October 20.
The festival emphasised the sustainability in promotional efforts by highlighting the eco-friendly aspects of village tourism, such as responsible waste management, locally-sourced food, and environmentally conscious practices. It also highlighted the authentic experiences of village tourism offering travellers’ a unique opportunity to experience the authentic lifestyle, culture, and traditions of rural communities and also promoting the unique heritage, crafts, and daily life of villagers that attract tourists seeking immersive experiences.
The event was graced by Zamyang Kunga Bhutia (Kazi), a government contractor and social worker. The chief guest with other attendees also witnessed displays of local flowers, handmade bamboo crafts, millet and other products from self-help groups (SHGs), and traditional textiles.
The festival also featured vibrant cultural dance performances, showcasing the rich heritage of the local community.
The guest of the day also attended the press meet where several questions were raised regarding the upliftment of village tourism. The discussions likely focused on strategies to promote rural destinations, enhance local infrastructure, and support community involvement in tourism, all aimed at creating sustainable development and economic growth for villages.
