GANGTOK: In a thrilling pre-quarterfinal match on November 13, Gangtok Himalayan SC defeated Delhi-based Sudeva FC 3-2 via a penalty shootout at Paljor Stadium. The match and extra-time had ended in a 1-1 draw.
Sudeva FC took an early lead in the 8th minute when Gangtok Himalayan SC defender Sangay Dundel conceded an own goal. He was trying to clear a ball but inadvertently hit it pass his goalkeeper Nimdup Lepcha.
However, Gangtok Himalayan found the equalizing goal in the 18th minute. The club’s foreign striker Snorton hit a powerful shot that gave the rival goalkeeper no chance.
Both sides played an attacking game but could not find the net despite creating several chances.
At the final whistle, the score was tied at 1-1. The match went to extra-time of 30 minutes but still the winning goal could not materialize.
Ultimately, the match was decided through penalties.
Sudeva FC failed to convert their three penalties due to some excellent goalkeeping from Nimdup Lepcha.
On the other hand, Gangtok Himalayan scored three penalties and eventually won the game 3-1. Its player Akash Sundas was declared the ‘man of the match’.
With this victory, Gangtok Himalayan has now reached the quarterfinal where they face KDN FC from Malaysia on November 17.
