PAKYONG: The Department of Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare, Pakyong district, hosted a special felicitation ceremony to recognise and celebrate outstanding girl achievers in sports under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) programme. The event took place at the conference hall of the District Collector’s Office, Pakyong on Monday.
Addressing the gathering, District Collector Agawne Rohan Ramesh, congratulated the young achievers for their dedication, discipline, and excellence in sports. He emphasised that sports not only build physical strength but also nurture leadership qualities, confidence and determination among young women. He commended the efforts of the department in promoting gender equality and empowering girls through recognition and encouragement.
In her remarks, Dikit Lepcha, deputy director-cum-Social Welfare officer, spoke about the objectives of the BBBP initiative, highlighting its focus on celebrating and empowering the girl child.
As part of the programme, the achievers were honoured with khadas, appreciation letters, and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao badges. A cake-cutting ceremony added to the spirit of celebration, symbolising pride in the girls’ achievements.
Kusum Sharma, gender specialist from the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, presented detailed profiles of the girl achievers.
The following sports achievers were felicitated during the event:
- Miss Phur Deeki Sherpa (Kickboxing) – Barapathing Busty: Winner of five gold, two silver, and one bronze medal at national-level tournaments.
- Miss Abhista Basnet (Football) – Namcheybong Busty: Represented India in the Under-17 Asian Women’s Football Tournament held in Kyrgyzstan and secured a gold medal at a tournament in Bhutan.
- Miss Sujorla Lepcha (Taekwondo) – Mamring Busty: Gold medallist at the Taekwondo Championship held at Paljor Stadium in March 2025.
- Miss Rikila Bhutia (Strength Lifting) – Kartok Busty: Holder of the title Junior Strongest Woman of Sikkim.
- Amba Women’s Cricket Team (Cricket) – Amba Busty: Recognised as the youngest team to participate in the SICA Senior Women’s A Division T20 Tournament.
The achievers shared their inspiring journeys, challenges, and motivations that shaped their success, engaging the audience in an interactive session filled with encouragement and positivity.
The celebration embodied the essence of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao-honouring the strength, determination, and achievements of young women who continue to bring pride to Pakyong District.
