BAC initiates to revive large cardamom cultivation legacy in Dzongu

GANGTOK: The Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Passingdang, Dzongu in North Sikkim, has taken a significant step towards reviving the historical economic legacy of Dzongu through the large cardamom cultivation. Guided by its core mandate of ensuring inclusive grassroots development and enhancing rural livelihoods, BAC Dzongu under the leadership and vision of Area MLA-cum-Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, continues to demonstrate unwavering commitment to sustainable rural progress.
In line with the state’s flagship programme “Mero Alaichi Mero Dhan” spearheaded by the Chief Minister, this modest yet meaningful initiative by BAC Dzongu involves the plantation of large cardamom in previously barren private land within the office premises. A total of 1,000 Golsai cardamom saplings were planted in the 1st phase and these regular outdoor activities are being done without hampering the public and office works. This symbolic act signifies a renewed hope for reviving the rural economy, not only of Dzongu but also for the broader Sikkimese agrarian landscape, a press release informs.
Historically, Dzongu stood as a vibrant centre of cardamom production in the state, contributing significantly to the local economy despite the geographical isolation and lack of infrastructural privileges. The land and the people once flourished through self-reliance, rooted in agriculture and traditional knowledge systems.
Today’s gesture, though small in scale, rekindles that legacy with a message of determination that transformation begins with intent and commitment at the grassroots level, said the Dzongu BAC.
This initiative is being supported by collaborative efforts with the local NGO Mutanchi Lom Aal Shezum (MLAS) who played a crucial role by supplying healthy cardamom saplings and providing technical expertise led by Dr. Sasanka Sekhar Bohra, Scientist, Indian Cardamom Research Institute, Spices Board of Sikkim and Dr. Puvichonu Rhutso, Assistant Director, Spices Board Divisional Office, Mangan.
This endeavour is more than just an agricultural activity; it is a conscious move to scientifically restore Dzongu’s cardamom potential while setting an example for optimal resource utilisation. The presence of capable human resources within government offices, when channelled meaningfully, can produce lasting and productive change.
“BAC Dzongu believes that initiatives like this not only inspire public participation and collective ownership but also instil a sense of pride and unity among the community. It underlines the philosophy that positive change does not always require large-scale external interventions but can begin with local will and action,” the release states.
