GANGTOK: The Citizen Action Party (CAP)- Sikkim has expressed its deep concerns by the recent tragic accidents involving government vehicles, which have resulted in the unfortunate loss of lives. In a span of a few days, two heart-wrenching incidents occurred — one at Reshithang, where a minor lost their life, and another at Bulbuley, where a student from Government College Burtuk tragically passed away.
“What is particularly alarming is that these accidents took place at odd hours, well after office timings. This raises serious questions about the purpose and use of government vehicles during non-working hours. Government vehicles are a resource meant for public service, and any misuse or negligence in their use can lead to dangerous and, as we have now seen, tragic consequences,” said CAP Sikkim spokesperson Albert Gurung in a press statement on September 22.
The CAP Sikkim demanded the Transport department to make public the standard protocol (SoP) and guidelines for the use of government vehicles.
“It is crucial for transparency to prevail, so that the public can be assured that government resources are being used appropriately and within the confines of the law. Also, we appeal the Sikkim Police to issue press reports and information regarding such incidents in the general interest of the people and Sikkim.”
“It is evident that the misuse of these vehicles for private purposes has become rampant, and this negligence is contributing to the increasing number of accidents. The government must take immediate steps to enforce stricter regulations and ensure that all government vehicles are used solely for official purposes,” demanded the CAP Sikkim.
The opposition party urged the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into these incidents, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure that such mishaps are prevented in the future. The safety of our citizens should always be the top priority, it said.
