GANGTOK: The sacred occasion of Pang Lhabsol, one of Sikkim’s most revered spiritual and cultural festivals, was celebrated with great devotion and traditional fervour at Tholung Gumpa, Dzongu, North Sikkim.
Tholung Monastery, also known as Rigdzin Chodubling, occupies a unique and exalted place in the religious and historical legacy of Sikkim. Established in 1760 by the 4th Lhatsun, Kunzang Jigme Gyatso, the monastery is among the most sacred in Sikkim. It houses priceless treasure Lhatsun Chenpo’s robes, holy scriptures, religious artifacts, and relics of immeasurable spiritual significance. Blessed by the divine presence of Guru Rinpoche, Tholung is also home to numerous sacred sites such as Thyu Khang, which continue to draw devotees and seeker of higher spiritual truth.
Alongside the Khamsil, a grand event observed every three years, Pang Lhabsol holds special importance for the people of Dzongu. Since the era of the Chogyals of Sikkim, the people of Dzongu have upheld the profound tradition of observing this festival on a turn-wise basis among the 12 Mondals of Dzongu.
During their turn, the Mondals observe the age-old practice of offering Jeju (the year’s token harvest) to the Chogyal, a gesture of eternal reverence that continues to this day in his memory. This living tradition symbolizes Dzongu’s unbroken bond with its ancestral heritage and spiritual identity.
For visitors, Tholung offers not only a sacred pilgrimage but also an unforgettable journey into nature and faith. The motorable road extends up to Bay village (12th Mile), from where a 4–5 hour uphill trek leads devotees and trekkers to the monastery. The journey is rewarded with breathtaking views, serene landscapes, and the profound blessings of a place steeped in divine grace. Just as pilgrims undertake tirtha yatras across India, a visit to Tholung promises an equally transformative experience—blending adventure, spirituality, and cultural immersion.
Tholung Monastery, with its rich legacy, timeless traditions, and deep-rooted faith, has the potential to emerge as a spiritual hub of global significance with continued support and attention from the Government of Sikkim.
The Tholung Management Committee, along with the people of Dzongu, extended their heartfelt gratitude to the State Government for the assistance and recognition received thus far.
The occasion was graced by Rinzing Chopel Lepcha, OSD to Sangha Constituency; the Block Development Officer, Dzongu; Pintshok Palzang Lepcha, CLC President Sangha; Nim Tshering Lepcha, CLC Convenor Sangha, along with eminent local gentries of Dzongu. Their presence added dignity and encouragement to this sacred celebration.
