
GANGTOK: A high-level meeting to discuss the resumption of flights at Pakyong Airport was held at Udaan Bhawan in New Delhi on Tuesday. The meeting, chaired by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, was convened at the request of Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, a press release informs.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, along with representatives from SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Alliance Air, attended the meeting. Airport Director of Pakyong Airport, Balasaheb Pote, presented a detailed update on the airport’s operational status, recent developments, and long-term plans aimed at improving flight reliability and passenger services.
The Lok Sabha MP highlighted the strategic importance of Pakyong Airport in enhancing regional connectivity and addressing the ongoing difficulties faced by residents, tourists, and the business community due to the suspension of flights. The absence of air services, he noted, has negatively impacted tourism and economic activity in the State.
Discussions focused on overcoming operational challenges such as unpredictable weather, aircraft suitability, and optimized scheduling to ensure consistent and safe flight operations.
The Minister of State for Civil Aviation assured full support from the Ministry in coordinating efforts with airlines and relevant stakeholders to expedite the restoration of air services to Sikkim. Airline representatives at the meeting expressed their willingness to work towards sustainable and long-term operations from Pakyong.
