
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang participated in the 10th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog held in New Delhi on May 24, in the esteemed presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Deputy Chairman of NITI Aayog Dr. Suman Bery along with Chief Ministers from various states and senior government officials.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister presented Sikkim Vision 2047, outlining the State’s ambitious roadmap to significantly grow its GSDP and emerge as India’s first Green Capital and Green Destination, anchored in the principles of sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth.
Key initiatives highlighted included village-led development, green cropping, enhanced regional connectivity, and global partnerships with a focus on ASEAN and East Asia.
The Chief Minister also stressed on the State’s commitment to youth empowerment through skilling and entrepreneurship, supported by the Institute for Transforming Sikkim (ITS), a policy aligned with NITI Aayog. He outlined Sikkim’s advancements in agriculture, healthcare, education, power, and digital connectivity, alongside the promotion of tourism, MSMEs, and industrial development. Programs like SEED (Sikkim Entrepreneurship and Economic Development) and INSPIRES are actively equipping the youth with global skills and job opportunities, he added.
Sector-specific academies are also being established to address emerging economic demands, shared the Chief Minister. As a pioneer in organic farming, Sikkim continues to lead in clean energy and waste management, fully aligning with India’s renewable energy goals through the expansion of hydropower and solar initiatives, he added.
The Chief Minister also raised three key demands before the Prime Minister:
- Climate-proofing of NH-10, which suffered major damage during the South Lhonak Lake flood,
- Development of a world-class highway connecting Siliguri to Sikkim to boost strategic and economic mobility,
- Support for a Multimodal Corridor and Integrated Check Post at Chewa Bhanjyang to enhance cross-border trade and regional connectivity.
The Chief Minister mentioned Sikkim’s commitment to the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and expressed confidence in continued support from the Central Government to realize this transformative agenda.
