GANGTOK: Heavy rains in Sikkim over the last three days have triggered multiple landslides in several areas across the State. Sikkim received 102 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours with the districts of Mangan, Soteng and Gyalshing receiving very heavy rainfall.
Due to sudden change in weather, high reaches of North Sikkim both along Lachen and Lachung valley experienced season’s first snowfall much before the onset of winters. Multiple landslides and unprecedented snowfall over the last a few days caused disruption of socio-economic activities and posing a challenge to all road users.
Sensing gravity of situation, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) mobilized their heavy machinery and manpower to clear strategic roads in North Sikkim, a press release informs.
Brave workers of BRO through their unfettered resilience and resolute resolve have remained committed to keep the roads open to ensure that movement of men and material does not suffer.
Freezing temperatures, insufficient oxygen, high winds and blizzards etc could not deter the will and determination of BRO workers, who despite all odds, ensured unhindered movement vehicles in North Sikkim.
