GANGTOK: In pursuance of the coordination meeting held to discuss the implementation of the Supreme Court’s directive on stray dog management in institutional areas, the Office of the Additional Director, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) Department, Pakyong, has announced the formation of a Stray Dog Control Committee for the district.
The committee has been set up in response to rising concerns over the growing stray dog population, public safety, and animal welfare in Pakyong. The initiative aligns with the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court mandating all States and Union Territories to strengthen stray animal management systems.
Key Functions of the Committee:
• Coordinate vaccination, sterilisation, and medical care of stray dogs through veterinary officers and field staff.
• Address public complaints related to stray dog issues.
• Promote awareness on humane and scientific dog population control.
• Manage and resolve conflicts involving humans and stray animals.
The committee includes representatives from the AH&VS Department, NGOs, and local bodies. Dr Anjala Pradhan, Additional Director and District Head, Pakyong, will serve as the Chairperson, while Dr Menuka Gurung, Deputy Director, SDVH Pakyong, has been designated as the District Nodal Officer.
