Teachers trained as facilitators for sanitation and hygiene

GANGTOK: The Sulabh School Sanitation Club, India, in collaboration with Alkem Foundation under Project Aagaz + with support from Education department, Government of Sikkim, conducted a one day ‘Facilitation Skills for Facilitators’ training on sanitation and hygiene at PM Shri Girls Senior Secondary Deorali School, Mini Hall, today.
The training session was led by Rupak Roy Choudhury & Samikshya Das Mohapatra from the Sulabh Alkem Foundation Sanitation Club, New Delhi.
The workshop had the participation of Samir Kumar, Manager, HR&CSR, Alkem Foundation, 25 teachers from the state government schoolsq, namely Government Senior Secondary School Machong, PM Shri Government Girls Senior Secondary School Deorali, Government Secondary School Dalapchand, Government Senior Secondary School Dikchu, Government Senior Secondary School Mamring and Government Senior Secondary School Rorathang.
Rupak Roy Choudhury, highlighted the aim as an initiative to equipping teachers and school management committee members and other stakeholders with knowledge and skills for effective and efficient management of Water Sanitation & Hygiene in Schools (WINS) in both development and emergency contexts.
Sukuman Subba, teacher of GSSS Machong, signified the true role of a teacher in helping the students learn in a clean and hygienic environment.
Subsequently, Acquino from GSSS Mamring stressed that the consistency of participatory activities in respective schools should be maintained by all the schools and it is the responsibility of the teachers to ensure that the students are engaged in more cleanliness activities along with academics.
During the programme, a combination of various participatory learning facilitation paradigms were used including exploratory learning, group discussions, plenary brainstorming, facilitator’s input, case studies and video documentaries among others.
It is to note that the Sulabh School Sanitation Club is one of the initiatives of Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, a Delhi based non-governmental organization (NGO). The NGO works closely with government agencies, international organizations like UNICEF and WHO, corporate partners and local communities.
The Sulabh School Sanitation Club is a child-centred and girl-led global movement of children and young people, engaged in bringing about positive social transformation in schools by empowering girls through hygiene education.
