GANGTOK: The Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim has responded to the SKM’s stand on the proposed concert of international musician Ed Sheeran during Sikkim’s 50th Statehood celebration.
The SKM’s release is laden with exaggerated assertions and unfounded allegations that divert attention from the tangible issues we’ve raised concerning the event’s financial, cultural, and infrastructural impact, said CAP Sikkim spokesperson Albert Gurung in a press statement on January 7.
Gurung maintained that CAP Sikkim’s stand against the Ed Sheeran concert isn’t about “petty politics” but stems from the party’s dedication to addressing the real needs of Sikkim and ensuring responsible use of public funds.
Fiscal Responsibility and Misplaced Priorities
“The announcement from the SKM government highlights a concerning disconnect from the state’s financial situation. Even with private sponsorships, it’s overly simplistic to claim there’ll be no financial repercussions for Sikkim’s resources. Hosting an event of this magnitude involves substantial costs beyond just ticket sales, including logistics, security, infrastructure improvements, and various hidden expenditures,” said the CAP Sikkim spokesperson.
He maintained that Sikkim is currently facing significant challenges, such as underfunded healthcare, insufficient rural infrastructure, and rising unemployment. Choosing to host a luxury concert over investing in essential public services raises important questions regarding governance. The Citizen Action Party-Sikkim strongly believes that public funds should be allocated towards long-term projects that deliver real benefits to the people of Sikkim, rather than temporary spectacles that leave no lasting legacy, he said.
Infrastructure Challenges in Sikkim: Glamour over Groundwork
“The claims regarding Sikkim’s readiness to host an international event seem overstated, particularly when we consider the state’s pressing infrastructural issues. Frequent landslides disrupt roads, rural areas often lack essential services, and current venues are not suitable for large-scale events. Instead of hastily pursuing a global concert, the government should prioritize resolving these critical infrastructure challenges,” said CAP Sikkim.
“Moreover, we must consider Sikkim’s delicate ecosystem. Hosting a large event poses risks, such as increased waste, depletion of resources, and potential harm to vulnerable areas. The concerns raised by the Citizen Action Party – Sikkim are not divisive; they stem from a genuine commitment to safeguarding Sikkim’s future.”
Championing Local Talent and Celebrating Our Culture
The CAP Sikkim spokesperson said the 50th Statehood Day presents a valuable opportunity to recognize the contributions of our people and highlight the unique traditions that make Sikkim special. By inviting a global star like Ed Sheeran while sidelining local artists, we risk undermining this significant occasion, he said.
“Instead of seeking external glamour, it would be more beneficial for the state to invest in nurturing homegrown talent through concerts, festivals, and platforms that celebrate Sikkim’s identity. The Citizen Action Party – Sikkim has long advocated for initiatives that empower local artists, providing them with opportunities to shine on both national and international stages.”
Tourism and Economic Growth: A Questionable Assumption
“The SKM government’s claim that Ed Sheeran’s concert will enhance tourism and spur economic growth is more speculative than certain. While it may bring a temporary influx of visitors, the lasting impact on tourism is far from guaranteed. Sikkim’s tourism thrives on its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and commitment to sustainable practices—not merely on occasional events. “
“The Citizen Action Party- Sikkim envisions a tourism approach that emphasizes sustainability and community involvement, ensuring that benefits are distributed throughout the state. Instead of pursuing fleeting international recognition, we should focus on solidifying Sikkim’s reputation as a year-round destination for eco-tourism, adventure, and wellness,” said Gurung.
Governance vs. Spectacle
“The SKM government’s assertion that the Citizen Action Party – Sikkim is engaging in “petty politics” to undermine their vision is not only unfounded but also a bit ironic. The CAP has consistently advocated for people-centered policies and sustainable development. By choosing to highlight a high-profile concert over pressing matters such as job creation, rural infrastructure, and healthcare, the SKM demonstrates a governance approach that values spectacle over meaningful action,” said Gurung.
Gurung added that the 50th Statehood Day celebrations should represent Sikkim’s resilience, advancement, and cultural pride. This occasion is a chance to honor those who have contributed to Sikkim’s journey and to aspire for a brighter, more inclusive future, he said.
The SKM spokesperson said: “We encourage the SKM government to shift its focus towards initiatives that genuinely benefit the people of Sikkim. While hosting Ed Sheeran may capture headlines, it is the grassroots initiatives, long-term commitments, and appreciation of local identity that will create a meaningful legacy.”
