GANGTOK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi today. To commemorate this milestone, various events are being organized across the nation at Meteorological Centres (MCs) and Regional Meteorological Centres (RMCs).
In Sikkim, the Meteorological Centre in Gangtok celebrated the occasion with a live telecast of the Prime Minister’s address in New Delhi. Leading up to the foundation day, the MC in Gangtok organized several activities.
A plantation drive was successfully held on January 7, emphasizing the crucial role forests play in maintaining ecological balance. The event’s theme was “Plantation for Mother Earth.”
An essay competition was organized on January 9, aiming to raise awareness about climate change and global warming among the younger generation. Students participated enthusiastically, making the event a success.
A blood donation camp was also organized on January 12, coinciding with Swami Vivekananda’s birthday. The theme “Donate Blood, Be a Life Saver” highlighted the importance of this noble act.
The celebration event in Gangtok included presenting mementos to dignitaries from various organizations, stakeholders, and media persons. The event concluded with a vote of thanks.
To celebrate 150th Foundation Day of IMD, a series of events, activities and workshops have been organised to showcase IMD’s achievements during the past 150 years, its role in making India climate-resilient, and demonstrate the role played by government institutions in providing various weather and climate services.
