GANGTOK: As a part of the Government of India’s flagship initiative, the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign), the Sugamya Yatra was flagged off on February 7 from Manan Kendra to MG Marg. This initiative aims to promote universal accessibility and inclusivity for persons with disabilities, fostering a barrier-free environment across built infrastructure, transport systems, and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Ecosystem.
Launched on December 3, 2015 by the Prime Minister, the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan is a transformative movement towards an inclusive India, in alignment with the vision of Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.The campaign is dedicated to ensuring that every citizen, regardless of ability, has equal access to public spaces and facilities.
Earlier, the special children visited the State Library, reinforcing the importance of accessibility in knowledge and learning spaces.
The flagging-off programme was attended by Mr Sandeep Jha, Assistant Collector Gangtok as the chief guest, along with Ms Urvashi Poudyal, Director Women and Child Development Department (WCDD); Dr M B Chettri, Joint Commissioner, Disability Division WCDD; Ms Pushpanjali Gupta, Director Composite Regional Centre (CRC); officials and staff from WCDD; members of the Access Audit Committee; representatives from various NGOs; and students from various special schools.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Sandeep Jha emphasised the importance of accessibility as an integral part of humanity. He highlighted the need to consider the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and stressed the importance of creating awareness and consciousness on this issue.
He further mentioned that to raise awareness, the Prime Minister has referred to persons with disabilities as Divyangjan. He stated that accessibility should extend beyond roads and infrastructure, encompassing social and digital accessibility as well, ensuring that those facing such difficulties can access everything equally. He added that such programmes will generate greater awareness and encourage inclusivity.
Dr M B Chettri stated that disability is not a disease but rather a social issue. While diseases can sometimes cause disability, he emphasised that persons with disabilities require comprehensive support, including proper treatment and education, to live life with dignity and equal respect. He further stated that persons with disabilities are an integral part of society and will always remain so. He reminded the audience that disability can happen to anyone, as it is often a result of unforeseen circumstances.
Encouraging collective efforts, he urged everyone to work towards creating a disability-friendly environment, stating that even small contributions toward the disability community can make a significant difference.
