GNATHANG: The 1st Ride to Doko La concluded its inaugural journey on Wednesday, marking a historic milestone in Sikkim’s tourism sector.
Organised by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department in collaboration with the Home Department, Government of Sikkim, and the 17th Mountain Division-Libing, the event signifies a major advancement in battlefield tourism for the state.
Riders embarked from Gangtok, traversing steep ascents and dramatic switchbacks through the Eastern Himalayas. The convoy paused at Tsomgo before making its way to the majestic Doko La Pass—positioned at an altitude of 14,130 feet at the tri-junction of India, Bhutan, and China. The 23 km detour from Kupup to Doko La offered participants sweeping vistas and reaffirmed the strategic significance of the region.
On arrival at Kupup, riders were welcomed with a traditional lunch and allocated homestays in Gnathang and Kupup.

The Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Tshering Thendup Bhutia, who was present at the Doko La Pass, addressed the gathering and extended heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army for their crucial support in making this historic event possible. He warmly welcomed all riders to the iconic pass and commended the motorcycle clubs whose enthusiastic participation has played a pivotal role in promoting Sikkim’s tourism potential.
The Minister emphasised that this ride, held under the banner of Sikkim’s 50 Years of Statehood celebrations, is a landmark initiative that adds immense value to the state’s tourism landscape. He highlighted the importance of such initiatives in driving economic growth and in the discovery and development of new tourism destinations across Sikkim.
He further noted that the broader tourism ecosystem—encompassing local businesses, communities, and stakeholders—stands to benefit substantially from progressive events like this.
The Minister underscored the critical role of battlefield tourism destinations, such as Doko La, in strengthening and diversifying Sikkim’s tourism offerings.
Concluding his address, the Minister lauded Sikkim’s extraordinary natural beauty, rich cultural traditions, and deep heritage, urging all participants and stakeholders to actively promote Sikkim as a premier global destination.
This landmark ride stands as a testament to Sikkim’s vision for innovative, inclusive, and sustainable tourism development.
