
GANGTOK: The inaugural programme of the North East NSS Festival 2025 was held on Tuesday at Manan Kendra, marking the start of a five-day celebration of youth service and cultural exchange.
Organised by the Sikkim State NSS Cell, Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, the festival will run from September 15 to September 19, 2025.
Minister for Education, Sports & Youth Affairs and Law & Parliamentary Affairs Departments, Mr Raju Basnet, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, he extended a warm welcome to all participants and guests, highlighting how such programmes foster friendship and cultural understanding among the North Eastern states. Emphasising the importance of life-skills training, he noted that these sessions are vital for today’s youth as they prepare for future endeavours. The Minister wished everyone an enriching stay in Sikkim and officially declared the festival open.
Delivering the welcome address, Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department Ms Yangchen D Tamang, expressed delight at hosting the festival, describing it as an honour and a source of deep pride for Sikkim. She underscored that the event reflects the ideals of youth, culture, and selfless service, and contributes to the national vision of Viksit Bharat by strengthening bonds of friendship and understanding across the region.
Regional Director North East Region, Mr C Carthigain, commended the colourful and inspiring start to the festival. He highlighted the Government of India’s special focus on the North East and encouraged participants to seize this opportunity to learn from the diverse sessions and carry home valuable experiences that will benefit their communities.
Earlier, a brief report on the festival’s objectives was presented through a PowerPoint presentation by State Nodal Officer NSS Sikkim, Ms Lalita Chettri.

The afternoon session carried the momentum forward with a series of interactive modules, including
• My Bharat and Experiential Learning (ELP)
• Basic Concept and Components of NSS
• Introduction to Mission LiFE
• State-wise Presentation on Topography, Culture, Demography, Flora & Fauna
• Components of Life Skill
The inaugural programme also featured vibrant cultural performances by participants from all North Eastern states.
Among the distinguished guests were Advisor, Department of Sports & Youth Affairs Mr Bikram Pradhan; Chairman, State Sports Development Board Mr Rinzing Wangyal Chopel Bhutia; Chairman, State Youth Development Board Mr Basant Yonzon; senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports GOI, Youth officers of NSS, the Vice-Chancellor of SRM University, principals of various colleges and schools, and officers of the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Deputy Director NSS, Ms Pedenla Lachungpa.
