GANGTOK: Northeast United FC advanced to the final of the 40th Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament, being held at Paljor Stadium, after a 2-0 victory over Gokulam FC Kerala in the semi-final on Wednesday evening.
The Shillong-based side secured their place in the final with two second-half goals. D. Gangte broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, brilliantly flicking a corner kick past the Gokulam goalkeeper.Despite Gokulam’s best efforts to level the score, Northeast United’s goalkeeper, Arman Tamang, was in inspired form, making several crucial saves to keep his team ahead.
The match was sealed in added time when substitute Mohammad Zahan found the net, securing a 2-0 win for his side.Tamang’s outstanding performance in goal earned him the ‘Man of the Match’ accolade.Northeast United FC has impressed throughout the tournament, showcasing brilliant football on their path to the final.
They defeated Khawzawl Vengthar FC of Mizoram 3-1 in the pre-quarters and delivered a dominant 6-1 victory over Royal FC Dubai in the quarterfinals.
The second semi-final will take place on Thursday evening, featuring local side Gangtok Himalayan SC against Chennaiyin FC.- SA Report
