GANGTOK: The General Sagat Singh Memorial Cup is currently underway at the breathtaking Thegu Football Ground, perched at an extraordinary altitude of 12,600 feet above sea level in Sikkim.
Organized under the aegis of Indian Army, this prestigious tournament serves as a sporting tribute to the legendary Lt General Sagat Singh, who commanded the 17 Mountain Division and played a pivotal role in defending India during the historic Nathu La and Cho La clashes against Chinese forces in 1967.
The tournament kicked off on July 28 with a vibrant ceremony graced by MLA Pamin Lepcha. The inaugural event featured a rich cultural programme highlighting the traditions, music, and patriotism of Sikkim. Locals and visitors alike were treated to a colourful showcase that set the tone for an emotionally charged and spirited competition.

Week One: Goals Galore
The opening week of matches delivered thrilling action and standout performances. NMFC Gangtok began their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kyongnosla Club, while SSFC dominated Sinolchu Sangh FC with a 3-0 win.
The Everest Boys made a strong statement with a 2-0 win over Ranjeet Boys, and Balor Boys showed their mettle by defeating 15th Mile (A) 3-0. The 3rd Battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles overwhelmed Changgu B with a convincing 4-0 win, and Sherathang PS impressed in their 4-1 triumph over Zuluk Boys.
But the week’s headline-grabbing performance came from 7th Mile, who delivered a jaw-dropping 11-0 rout of 11 Mile—a scoreline that sent ripples through the tournament. The drama continued with Sikkim Yetis securing a tense 4-2 victory over Brotherhood in a penalty shootout. On August 4, Mr Veteran outclassed 29-Kabi 8-1, while 11th Mile Taxi Driver edged past Dawa Boys in a nail-biting 3-2 encounter.

Looking Ahead: A Patriotic Finale in Sight
The tournament continues to build momentum as it heads toward its climactic conclusion. The grand finale is scheduled for August 15, coinciding with India’s Independence Day celebrations, adding patriotic fervour to the sporting spectacle.
Adding significant star power to the event, renowned national footballer Bikash Jairu will attend as chief guest on August 13, bringing prestige and excitement to the tournament. His presence is expected to inspire young players and elevate the profile of football even more in the region.
With more high-stakes fixtures ahead and regional pride hanging in the balance, the General Sagat Singh Memorial Cup promises to deliver unforgettable moments as teams battle for glory at one of India’s most unique football venues, an Army press release informs.
