GANGTOK: The Sikkim Science Centre, located at Namli near Ranipool, has seen a remarkable surge in visitor numbers this year, reflecting its growing popularity and educational impact.
Established in 2008 as a collaborative initiative between the National Council of Science Museums under the Ministry of Culture and the State Science & Technology Department, the Centre has become a hub for interactive learning and scientific exploration. According to a press statement from the department, this increase in visitors is attributed to the Centre’s engaging exhibits, educational workshops, and advanced scientific installations.
From April to October 2024, the Centre recorded 3,181 visitors—more than double the 1,117 visitors during the same period in 2023. The impressive growth is attributed to several factors, including strategic networking with stakeholders, strong support from the Education Department, improved facilities, an active social media presence, and a focus on personalized visitor experiences.
The Sikkim Science Centre boasts a wide range of interactive exhibits and educational offerings. These include a state-of-the-art digital planetarium, a 3D film theatre, science galleries, an innovation hub, a children’s activity corner, and an expansive science park. These hands-on experiences allow visitors to explore scientific concepts and their real-world applications.
The Innovation Hub, in particular, has been a highlight, engaging 88 local schools in workshops on robotics, physical and life sciences, electronics, and computer programming. Additionally, the Centre has hosted career counseling and motivational sessions to inspire students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
The Centre is open daily, from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, except on Mondays. It remains accessible on weekends and public holidays, ensuring that visitors can enjoy its offerings at their convenience.
