MANGAN: Following his tour of Mangan District, Governor Om Prakash Mathur visited Tasa Tengay Government Senior Secondary School in Chungthang on September 22.
Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by Mr Samdup Lepcha, Minister Social Welfare, Women & Child Development and Printing & Stationery departments, along with SDM, BDO and other officials.
The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by SDM Chungthang, Mr Arun Chettri.
In his speech, Governor Om Prakash Mathur expressed gratitude to the locals for their welcome during his visit to Mangan District. He commended the residents for their resilience in the face of recent disasters, recognising their efforts to rebuild and support one another. He acknowledged the challenges they have faced and noted the strength of the community in overcoming difficulties.
The Governor emphasised the importance of unity and cooperation as essential elements in the recovery process and encouraged continued collaboration among residents to restore normalcy.
He assured the community that he would talk to the central government to secure support for the affected areas. He mentioned the development plans set out by Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi for the Northeast region.
He said that these initiatives aim to improve infrastructure, support local economies and enhance the quality of life for residents. He expressed his commitment to ensuring that the needs of the community are met and that assistance reaches those who require it most.
In conclusion, the Governor acknowledged the Chief Minister and the legislature for their efforts in promoting developmental initiatives across Sikkim.
Minister Mr Samdup Lepcha, in his address, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his visit to Mangan District. He presented details of the damage caused by recent floods, highlighting the loss of life, destruction of property and disruption to road connectivity, as well as the impact on local flora and fauna.
Minister Lepcha outlined the government’s schemes aimed at supporting the affected areas and detailed ongoing projects focused on sustainable tourism development within the district. He emphasised the importance of these initiatives in promoting economic recovery and providing assistance to those impacted by the floods.
DC Mangan, Mr Anant Jain (IAS) offered a brief overview of the geographical features and tourism potential of Mangan District. He detailed the impacts of the recent floods, including the displacement of residents and economic losses due to damaged infrastructure.
Panchayat President Chunthang GPU, Ms Diki Lepcha, also expressed gratitude to the Governor for his visit. She presented the challenges faced by residents due to the flooding and discussed the recovery and support initiatives provided by the state government.
Also present were Zilla Panchayat, ADC Chungthang, Additional Secretary to Governor, BDO Chungthang, ASP Chungthang, officials, BRO officials and locals.
The programme concluded with an interactive session that included students, teachers and local residents.
The Governor addressed concerns about flood damage and assured possible support for recovery efforts.
