GANGTOK: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba on May 14 called on Governor Om Prakash Mathur at Raj Bhavan, Gangtok. The meeting served as an opportunity for open and constructive dialogue on several key issues that reflect the aspirations and long-standing demands of the people of Sikkim, a press release from the MP’s office informs.
During the conversation, Subba extended warm greetings to the Governor on the Golden Jubilee of Sikkim’s Statehood, marking five decades of democratic growth, unity, and inclusive development. He emphasized that while Sikkim has made remarkable progress, especially under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister P.S. Tamang (Golay), there remain areas that require continued focus and support from both the State and central governments, the release mentions.
One of the central topics of discussion was the long-pending demand for the inclusion of twelve left-out communities of Sikkim in the Scheduled Tribes list.
The Lok Sabha MP highlighted the deep social and constitutional relevance of this issue and expounded with gravity the need for urgent action by the Union Government. He also brought up the matter of the Limboo and Tamang communities, who were granted Scheduled Tribe status in 2003 but are still awaiting the implementation of reserved seats in the State Legislative Assembly. These matters, he noted, represent not just administrative processes, but the realization of long-denied rights and recognition for these communities.
The dialogue further touched upon the persistent challenges in infrastructure and connectivity, particularly in West Sikkim.
Subba shared his observations regarding the limited road and rail access in the region and acknowledged the significant steps taken under the present state government to improve transportation links. He discussed the progress on the Sevoke-Rangpo rail line and welcomed the recently sanctioned Final Location Survey for the proposed Melli–Jorethang–Legship–Dentam railway extension.
Additionally, he conveyed proposals submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for new National Highways in the Soreng and Gyalshing districts, underlining the urgent need to integrate these remote areas with the broader development framework of the State and the nation.
Another matter raised during the meeting was the operational condition of Pakyong Airport.
The Lok Sabha MP expressed concern over irregular flight services caused by weather and technical constraints, and the resulting impact on tourism, connectivity, and emergency response. He requested that the Governor support ongoing efforts to enhance aviation infrastructure and ensure regular and reliable operations at the airport.
The Governor responded positively to the concerns raised and appreciated the efforts of the State government in grappling with the varied and formidable trials of progress and improvement. He assured Subba of his continued support and coordination with the State leadership under Chief Minister P.S. Tamang (Golay), and expressed his willingness to raise these issues from his side with the concerned authorities at the central level.
The meeting concluded on a constructive and encouraging note, reaffirming a shared commitment to the growth and well-being of all sections of society in Sikkim.
Indra Hang Subba expressed his sincere gratitude to the Governor for his time, guidance, and support in advancing the aspirations of the people.
