PAKYONG: In a proud moment for Sikkim, Khem Kumar Chettri, a progressive young farmer from Kamarey village in Duga Block, Pakyong District, was honoured with the esteemed “Best Fish Farmer Award” in recognition of his outstanding contribution to fish farming in the state.
The award was presented during the 25th Fish Farmers Day celebration, jointly organised by the College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, Tripura and the North East Society for Fisheries and Aquaculture (NESFA).
At just 31, Chettri has emerged as an example of rural innovation and self-reliance. With a background in Industrial Training Institute (ITI) education, he chose to root his future in farming rather than chasing urban employment. On his modest 0.809-hectare landholding, he embarked on a journey of integrated farming, with a passionate focus on ornamental fish and Exotic Magur Culture (EMC).
With consistent support and handholding from the Department of Fisheries, Sikkim, Chettri overcame initial challenges through sheer dedication and a willingness to learn. He availed government schemes, attended hands-on training, and embraced scientific techniques in breeding, disease control, and rearing. With improved farm infrastructure and access to quality inputs, he expanded into commercial ornamental seed production, transforming his farm into a model of sustainable aquaculture.
Chettri’s success has not only uplifted his own economic condition but also inspired others in the region to view fish farming as a viable and profitable venture. His efforts have opened avenues for local employment and introduced innovative livelihood opportunities in rural Sikkim.
Beyond aquaculture, he has diversified into apiculture with 55 beehive boxes, dairy farming with Jersey and Siri cows, and banana cultivation, illustrating an integrated and sustainable farming model. His dedication, adaptability, and entrepreneurial spirit have made him a role model for the farming community.
From a determined learner to a decorated achiever, Khem Kumar Chettri’s journey is a beacon of hope and motivation, proving that with vision, support, and hard work, dreams do flourish in the farmlands of Sikkim.
