GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang participated in a high-level meeting on the Implementation of New Criminal Laws in the Northeastern Region, held in Guwahati under the esteemed presence and guidance of Home Minister Mr Amit Shah on March 16. The meeting, organized under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, served as a crucial platform to assess the implementation of the three new criminal laws across the Northeastern states.
On behalf of the Government and people of Sikkim, the Chief Minister extended gratitude to the Home Minister for his invaluable guidance and patronage in driving this transformative legal transition.
A comprehensive report detailing Sikkim’s achievements, preparedness, and challenges in implementing the new criminal laws was presented by the Chief Secretary, Government of Sikkim, R. Telang. The report outlined key initiatives undertaken by the state to ensure seamless enforcement and adaptation to the new legal framework.
“As a border state sharing international boundaries with China, Nepal, and Bhutan, Sikkim has placed national security at the forefront of its governance priorities. The state government remains resolutely committed to strengthening law enforcement, enhancing judicial efficiency, and advancing forensic capabilities to ensure robust security measures”, stressed the Chief Minister.
Furthermore, several initiatives have already been set in motion to ensure the seamless implementation of these reforms, aligning with the state’s commitment to maintaining law and order while reinforcing national security efforts, he added.
Given Sikkim’s strategic location, the government is actively working on:
• Bolstering border surveillance to prevent security threats.
• Enhancing intelligence infrastructure for proactive law enforcement.
• Equipping police forces with cutting-edge technology to strengthen national security.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister deliberated on several critical aspects of modern policing and judicial reforms, including:
1. Strengthening Digital Infrastructure in all police stations to facilitate efficient law enforcement.
2. Expanding Video Conferencing Facilities to improve judicial accessibility and expedite legal proceedings.
3. Enhancing Forensic Science Laboratory Capabilities to support evidence-based investigations.
4. Training & Capacity Building programs to upskill law enforcement personnel.
5. Modernizing Police Stations with advanced technological interventions.
6. Strengthening Sikkim’s Police Force & Infrastructure to ensure swift law enforcement responses.
7. Cybercrime Awareness & Response measures to combat rising digital threats.
8. Forensic Advancements & Legal Implementation strategies to align with modern investigative techniques.
He also mentioned how Sikkim has made remarkable strides in modernizing its police force, implementing new criminal laws, and prioritizing national security and women’s safety. With continuous training, technological upgrades, and strategic collaborations, the state remains well-prepared to navigate the evolving challenges of modern policing, he further added.
Expressing gratitude to the Home Minister and Central Government, the Chief Minister said, “Sikkim is committed to upholding justice, security, and the rule of law, ensuring a safer and more just society for all”.
The Chief Minister also extended sincere gratitude to the Government of Assam and the organizing team for their dedication and meticulous efforts in making the event a resounding success. Their commitment and hard work were highly commendable, contributing to a productive and insightful deliberation on the future of law enforcement in the region.
