GANGTOK: Delhi Public School, Gangtok was officially inaugurated by Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang-Golay at Lumsey, 5th Mile Tadong in Gangtok on October 21.
Also present were Raju Basnet, Minister of Education , Sports and Youth Affairs and Law Departments, G T Dhungel, Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Culture Departments, Tshering Palden Bhutia, Deputy Mayor, GMC, Former Legislators, R Telang, ACS Home and Education Departments, Tashi Chophel Lepcha, Secretary (School Education), Education Department, Praveen Srivastav, Member of Board of Management, DPS, Sandip Killa, Pro Vice Chairman of DPS Gangtok, Government Officers, Parents and other dignitaries.
In his address, the Chief Minister congratulated the DPS management on the successful inauguration of the institute and emphasised the state government’s ongoing commitment to improving the education sector. He highlighted that the establishment of such a renowned institution in the state is a step forward for the state.
The Chief Minister encouraged students to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the school. He also encouraged the authorities to prioritise recruiting teachers and non-teaching staff from the state, promoting local participation in the institution’s development.
The Chief Minister, outlined the government’s initiatives in education, emphasizing reserved seats for students pursuing higher education through state-sponsored programs particularly Chief Minister’s Merit Scholarship Scheme till graduation level. He highlighted the establishment of a state of the art model school in Namchebong Constituency, where faculty will be selected from existing government teachers after a rigorous interview process. Successful candidates will receive an additional 25% salary incentive.
The Chief Minister, acknowledging teaching as a noble profession, also proposed restructuring teachers’ salaries into two components: a salary component and a teaching allowance component. Only teachers actively engaged in teaching will be eligible for the teaching allowance, while those on deputation to other departments will forfeit it.
The Chief Minister, advocating a fair and merit-based education system, urged everyone to refrain from seeking recommendations for school admissions and teacher transfers, promoting a transparent process instead. He concluded his address by wishing DPS continued success in maintaining its global brand and reputation in Sikkim.
In his address, Mr Raju Basnet highlighted the state government’s initiatives in advancing the education sector. He expressed optimism that the institution would play a key role in instilling strong values in students while educating them about the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the state. Mr Basnet emphasised that along with academic excellence, it is essential for students to develop a deep understanding and appreciation of their cultural roots, which the institution is well-positioned to foster.
GT Dhungel spoke about the vital role of education in shaping future generations in his address. He underscored the importance of providing quality education while instilling strong values and morals in students.
Dhungel expressed hope that students enrolling in the institution would approach their education with the right perspective. He also highlighted that education not only builds knowledge but also shapes character, stressing the importance of cultivating good behaviour alongside academic excellence.
