GYALSHING: The Independence Day festivities in Gyalshing gathered further momentum on the tenth day of the Open Men’s Football Tournament 2025 at Kyongsa Stadium, where the excitement of competitive matches was complemented by vibrant cultural performances and the observance of Sikkim’s 50th year of Statehood.
Organised by Yangthang Sporting Club in collaboration with the District Administration, Gyalshing, the event drew a large and enthusiastic gathering of residents and sports enthusiasts.
The District Collector, Gyalshing, Tenzing D Denzongpa, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Zilla Members, ADC (Development) Surat Gurung, BDO Gyalshing Mr Garap D Bhutia and OSD SP Mangyung as the Guests of Honour.
In his address, the Chief Guest urged the public to take pride in Sikkim’s remarkable progress over the past five decades and to work collectively towards building a healthier and progressive society. He expressed gratitude to all individuals and organisations whose efforts have made the celebrations successful, and appealed to participants to uphold discipline and the true spirit of sportsmanship. He also informed the gathering of the various activities planned for August 15.
The day’s sporting programme commenced with a Veterans Football Match between Darap-Nambu GPU and Tikjeck-Lingchom GPU, in which Darap-Nambu GPU secured a place in the finals with a decisive 4–1 victory, setting up a championship clash against Minister XI on August 14.
This was followed by an intense quarter-final match between Lingchom FC and Gorgian Underdogs FC, which kept spectators on edge. Lingchom FC emerged victorious with a 2–1 win, advancing to the semi-finals. Mr. Phunding Limboo (Jersey No. 4) of Lingchom FC was adjudged Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
Adding a cultural dimension to the day, students from various schools and academies presented traditional and patriotic dances, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Sikkim and captivating the audience with their spirited performances.
The programme featured a welcome address by Patron, IDCC, Shri PR Kharka, and concluded with a vote of thanks by General Secretary-I, Mr Daniel Dahal. The proceedings were compered by General Secretary-II, IDCC, Mr Sancha Hang Limboo.
The day’s celebrations were attended by officials from the District Administration, members of Yangthang Sporting Club, and hundreds of spectators, bringing together competition, culture, and civic pride in equal measure.
