NAMCHI: The International Day of Older Persons, organised by the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Namchi District was observed at Melli Dara GPU on Monday.
The event centered around the theme, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights,” highlighting the significant contributions of older adults in building resilient and fair societies. It underscored their importance in influencing decisions at both local and global platforms.
MLA/Advisor Melli Constituency, Mr N B Pradhan, in his speech, emphasized that parents must instill good values in their children, as this is the foundation for nurturing responsible and respectful individuals. He urged senior citizens to continue contributing to the welfare of their communities. He reminded them that though they are retired they still have the energy and experience to make meaningful contributions. He cited examples of elderly individuals who continue to serve society and encouraged others to follow their lead.
He also appealed to the Panchayat members to remain available in their offices so that people can easily access services and resolve their issues. He noted that due to miscommunication, many welfare schemes go unnoticed, and senior citizens often miss out on benefits intended for them. He encouraged all elderly citizens to obtain a senior citizen card to ensure they receive the maximum advantages. He further advised social welfare inspectors to maintain close coordination with the Panchayats so that schemes reach the people they are meant for.
Additionally, he shared information about the Shravan Kumar Puraskar, an award given to children who provide exemplary care and support to their parents. He concluded by encouraging everyone present to cultivate selflessness and continue working for the betterment of society.
DC Namchi, Ms Anupa Tamling, in her address, emphasized the importance of protecting and supporting the senior members of society. She noted that while times are changing, it remains essential for older persons to be aware of various schemes and Acts meant for their welfare and protection. She explained that if any issue arises, a written application can be submitted to the DC or SDM office, and the authorities will take necessary action. She assured that the administration is committed to work for the wellbeing of senior citizens.
She further highlighted that senior citizens must prioritize their health and should never hesitate to voice their concerns or seek help from the administration. Mental health should be a key focus for every elderly individual. She also spoke about school dropouts and encouraged the retired personnel present to guide and support these youths, whether by helping them develop skills or motivating them to return to school. Such efforts would be a meaningful contribution to society.
Additionally, she announced that a comprehensive database of older persons will be created and updated every month, ensuring that the specific needs of each senior citizen are well documented. She also emphasized the importance of issuing senior citizen cards to all eligible individuals so they can fully access the benefits and services meant for them.
SWO WCSC&D Namchi, Mr Shyam S Pradhan, in his speech, highlighted the significance of the International Day for Older Persons and noted that many people are still unaware of the various schemes and Acts available to them. He delivered an insightful address on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, emphasizing the importance of senior citizens being informed about such provisions.
He further emphasized that awareness is crucial, stressing that every senior citizen should be informed about the various Acts and welfare schemes designed to support them. He also advised that individuals should refrain from distributing their land or property to their children while they are still alive, as it can often lead to complications.
Additionally, he noted that social welfare inspectors should work closely with the Panchayats to ensure that senior citizens are made aware of the schemes and benefits available to them. Strengthening this collaboration would help older persons access the support they need more effectively.
The programme also included a segment in which three senior citizens were presented with letters of felicitation. As a gesture of appreciation blankets, walking sticks, wheelchairs, hearing aids, knee braces, and hip braces were distributed to elderly attendees. This was followed by the honouring of retired employees and senior community members for their service and contributions to society.
The programme also featured cultural presentations and musical performances by senior citizens as well as participating officials.
The programme had the presence of panchayat members, senior citizens, staff from WCSC&D welfare department and staff from Melli Dara GPU.
The programme concluded with all attendees coming together to sing Sikkim’s State Anthem, “Jaha Bagcha Teesta Rangit”.
