GANGTOK: On the occasion of the 58th ‘Nathu La Day’ today, Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, High Court of Sikkim Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder, Sikkim Legislative Assembly Speaker MN Sherpa, GOC 17th Mountain Division Major General Amit Kabhtiyal paid tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives at the Indo-China War of 1967 at Sherathang War Memorial at Nathu La Pass, Indo-China border.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor highlighted that today marks “Nathu La Vijay Diwas”, a day of great pride and significance and he is honoured to be present with everyone on this special occasion. He extended his warm greetings to all the attendees.The Governor highlighted the historic and prestigious significance of the day, describing it as a source of immense pride.

The Governor also pressed on the creation of a film to commemorate and preserve the victorious Nathu la Day of 1967. Such a film, he suggested, would inspire the youth to consider joining the army and deeply embed the essence and importance of Nathu La Victory Day in the hearts and minds of people. He expressed that Nathu La evokes a sense of pride and national dignity.
He further emphasised the global respect for the Indian Army, stating that it has not only protected India but also extended support to other nations in times of need, earning admiration worldwide.
Likewise, in a significant announcement during his address, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang declared that starting next year, Nathu La Day will be celebrated as ‘Nathu La Vijay Diwas’.
“Nathu La Day symbolizes the valour and sacrifice of the brave soldiers of the Indian Army, who protect our nation’s sovereignty in some of the harshest conditions. On this solemn occasion, I extend my deepest gratitude to these courageous souls whose unmatched service and ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered,” the Chief Minister stated.
He also paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Late Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, crediting his visionary leadership for reviving the Silk Route through Nathu La and enhancing ties with China. Likewise, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, acknowledging the role of his leadership and the ‘Vibrant Village’ initiative in bringing development and essential services to remote border areas, thereby strengthening both national security and local communities.
In his address, the Chief Minister extended his support to the soldiers, saying, “We stand with you, salute your dedication, and thank you for your relentless service to the nation.” He also offered reverence to Baba Harbhajan Singh Ji, concluding with wishes for prosperity and peace for all.
Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder extended his greetings to the Indian Army, highlighting the importance of Nathu La Day. “The Army safeguards the very foundation of our democracy -the executive, legislature, and judiciary. This celebration is unique, and Sikkim is setting a new precedent since the foundations of our democracy – the executive, legislature, and judiciary have all come under one roof to commemorate this day”, shared the Chief Justice.
He highlighted the historic importance, noting that it marked a pivotal moment when peace along the border was established.
Also present, during the visit, were Chief Secretary, DGP and distinguished officials of Indian Army, Sikkim Police and Government of Sikkim. The dignitaries also visited Nathu La Pass and interacted with the Army jawans.
